Dear Fort Island Families, The holiday season is behind us however PTA would like to help continue the spirit of giving in our school community. In the trophy case of the school lobby you will notice a Community Tree with bare branches. The children will have an opportunity to add leaves to the tree by participating in activities to help others. Here is how the Random Acts of Community project works. First your child completes a service to help another person (his/her own idea or one taken from our list of suggestions). After your child has completed the task he/she colors a leaf and writes his/her name and room number on it. A parent must also sign the leaf for it to be added to the tree. As the leaves are returned they will placed on The Community Tree. Enclosed is a leaf template. Additional leaves can be obtained at www.Copley-Fairlawn.org or from the office.Listed below are some suggestions manageable for elementary aged children, but feel free to think of other great ways to help: Shovel a walkway for a neighbor Write a letter to a soldier Visit a nursing home (play a game with residents, bring baked goods, send colored pictures or cards, read stories) Collect and deliver food, blankets, toys etc to a local animal shelter Make and deliver blankets, dolls or crafts to Children’s Hospital Collect food and deliver to the Food Bank or other shelter Help a neighbor in need Collect and deliver infant items to Akron Pregnancy Service Pick up litter in your neighborhood or at school Visit with an elderly or sick neighbor Donate gently used toys to Goodwill or other nonprofit organization Reach out to a child who needs a friend- invite them to sit with you at lunch or play Participate in the Nike shoe drive (clean rubber-soled shoes can be placed in container in the lobby under trophy case- will be shredded for play surfaces in New Orleans) www.letmeplay.com or see Miss CutilloThis activity begins Friday, January 11 and will continue through Friday, February 29. It will be exciting to watch the bare branches fill with colorful leaves as the students’ good deeds are added to the Community Tree.
